Sciacca is a very ancient town. The Greek were the first to discover its natural thermal resources, and the town developed into a health resort named “Therma”.

The current name has its origins from the Saracens (Arab people). Depending on the various historical theories the ancient name was Sciakk, Scaqqa and Xacca.

Today, the main economic sectors are the fishers’ port (the second most important of Sicily after Mazzara del Vallo) as well as the cultivation of vegetables, olives and grapes.

The very mild climate with around 300 days of sunshine per year, the abundance of monuments and the culinary specialities make this town a very interesting holiday destination. In 2010 a 5-star hotel with a golf course opened near Sciacca.
